On the holy occasion of Gurupurnima, I am thinking of you and sending you blessings of Holy Guruji, Mahaprabhuji and Sri Devpuriji. This is the first Gurupurnima that we have to celebrate without our beloved Gurudev Holy Guruji. He is not any more with us in physical form, but his blessing is with us all the time. On Gurupurnima I have to now be in India, to comfort and look after Guruji's disciples, but in my thoughts and prayers I am together with you, too.
Gurupurnima is celebrated in remembrance and veneration of that special moment when the first sunray touched the earth and indicated the very first move towards the development of consciousness. The Sanskrit root syllable "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes the darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. Only the true Guru, our spiritual master, removes our ultimate darkness and inspires and guides us on the path of God-realization.
On Gurupurnima we start a new spiritual year. For this everyone should take a new Sankalpa: that you will increase and intensify your practice. Make up your mind to overcome your laziness and practise every day regularly. This should be your Sankalpa for this Gurupurnima! Practise every day Asanas, Pranayama, Mantra and meditation, and practise day by day more love and understanding. Include in your Sankalpa that your understanding, your mercy and forgiveness will increase day by day. To understand, to give and to forgive – this is Yoga in Daily Life.
Don’t create anger, jealousy and hatred – create love, respect and compassion towards everyone. Avoid gossiping and negative criticising. When I come back from India do not receive me with complaints and quarrelling. Welcome me with good news, positive words and positive thoughts.
Keep in mind and bring into realisation these three qualities or attitudes:
Maitri – Karuna – Mudit
Maitri - friendship, Karuna - mercy, and Mudit - cheerfulness, kindness, a smile of happiness on the face. Be kind, give love to everyone, but don’t expect anything. This should be the nature of a Yogi. Whoever has these qualities and is a friend to all and makes friends with everybody, will be happy. Be happy yourself and make others happy.
This should be your Gurupurnima-Sankalpa.
On Gurupurnima, on Friday, July 2nd, you should get up at sunrise. Wash and dress yourself and then perform Mansic Puja to Gurudev. Sing prayer, meditate and listen to the Guru Gita. I know that for many of you it is hard to observe fasting, but at least on Gurupurnima everybody should fast, eating only one meal. During the day you can take milk, nuts and fruits.
On this day all ashrams should be opened during the daytime, so that everybody can come to have Darshan, to meditate and pray. In the evening there should be Satsang and Guru Gita meditation. The Gurupurnima-Prasad should be donated by somebody of the yoga-group.
Where there is love there is no distance. I am with you in my mind and with my blessings.
We are fortunate that in this year we will have two Gurupurnimas, on July 2nd and on July 31st. On July 31st I will be in Europe celebrating with you in Vép, Vienna and Strilky. I am looking forward to seeing you there.
With Love and Blessing of Mahaprabhuji,
Swamiji
